Cassandra
pulled down at the bottom edges of her jumper, and looked at
herself in the tall mirror in front of her. She wasn’t long out of
the shower, and her damp hair hung heavily down from her head, and
stopped just below the shoulders. She ran her fingers through it a
few times, and then grabbed a handful of strands to run under her
nose. The smell of freshly shampooed hair wafted through her
nostrils. She tossed it back behind her, and then lightly pressed
her palms down the back of her head and neck, to smooth it out
again.
Cassandra had
always had a preference for having her hair long, and an experiment
with short, cropped hair lasted less than a day. She had agonised
over it for weeks, looking through magazines for ideas, and
eventually plucked up the courage to book a morning appointment at
a nearby salon. She arrived back home in the afternoon, and had an
excruciatingly long wait for her husband, Dave, to come home from
work.
