A light breeze produced a dry rattling sound<\/b> from some nearby bushes. It lifted delicate<\/b> little veils of dust from a few sandy patches<\/b> nearby and shifted a lock of dark hair across<\/b> the forehead of the woman sitting on the<\/b> wood and canvas camp chair which was<\/b><\/p>\n

perched, not quite level, on a patch of bare<\/b> rock near the edge of a low ridge looking out<\/b> over the scrub and sand of the desert. In the<\/b> distance, trembling through the heat haze,<\/b> was the straight line of the road. Some<\/b> scrawny trees, few taller than one man<\/b> standing on another’s shoulders, marked the<\/b> course of the dusty highway. Further away,<\/b> tens of kilometres beyond the road, a line of<\/b> dark, jagged mountains shimmered in the<\/b> baking air. <\/b><\/p>\n

By most human standards the woman was<\/b><\/p>\n

tall, slim and well muscled. Her hair was<\/b> short and straight and dark and her skin was<\/b><\/p>\n

the colour of pale agate. There was nobody of<\/b> her specific kind within several thousand light<\/b> years of where she sat, though if there had<\/b> been they might have said that she was<\/b> somewhere between being a young woman<\/b><\/p>\n

and one at the very start of middle age. They<\/b> would, however, have thought she looked<\/b> somewhat short and bulky. She was dressed in<\/b> a pair of wide, loose-fitting pants and a thin,<\/b> cool-looking jacket, both the same shade as<\/b> the sand. She wore a wide black hat to shade<\/b> her from the late morning sun, which showed<\/b> as a harsh white point high in the cloudless,<\/b> pale green sky. She raised a pair of very old<\/b> and worn-looking binoculars to her<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
