Randolph stepped into the room. It was large, painted the same bilious<\/p>\n

yellow and battleship gray as every other office and corridor in the Omaha<\/p>\n

Central Post Office. Not that much of the walls was visible. Piled higher<\/p>\n

than head-height on every side was mail. Sacks, satchels, boxes and carts<\/p>\n

of it, spilling out onto the cold concrete floor.<\/p>\n

\u201cDead letters, \u201d Homer said. \u201cStuff even the good ol\u2019 U.S. Post Office can\u2019t<\/p>\n

deliver. Quite a sight, huh?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jaffe was agog, but he made sure not to show it. He made sure to show<\/p>\n

nothing, especially to wise guys like Homer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is all yours, Randolph, \u201d his superior said. \u201cYour little corner of<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat am I supposed to do with it?\u201d Jaffe said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSort it. Open it, look for any important stuff so we don\u2019t end up putting<\/p>\n

good money in the furnace. \u201c<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s money in them?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the middle of the country,\u201d Jaffe observed. \u201cGateway to the West. Or<\/p>\n

East. Depending on which way you\u2019re facing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAin\u2019t the dead center,\u201d Homer countered. \u201cBut we still end up with all the<\/p>\n

crap. And it\u2019s all got to get sorted. By band. By you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
