You know me. And you know I\u2019m a space cadet. <\/b><\/p>\n

You know I\u2019ve campaigned for, among other things, private mining<\/b> expeditions to the asteroids. In fact, in the past I\u2019ve tried to get you to pay for<\/b> such things. I\u2019ve bored you with that often enough already, right? <\/b><\/p>\n

So tonight I want to look a little farther out. Tonight I want to tell you why I<\/b> care so much about this issue that I devoted my life toil. <\/b><\/p>\n

The world isn\u2019t big enough any more. You don\u2019t need me to stand here and<\/b> tell you that. We could all choke to death, be extinct in a hundred years. <\/b><\/p>\n

Or we could be on our way to populating the Galaxy. <\/b><\/p>\n

Yes, the Galaxy. Want me to tell you how? <\/b><\/p>\n

Turns out it\u2019s all a question of economics. <\/b><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s say we set out to the stars. We might use ion rockets, solar sails,<\/b> gravity assists. It doesn\u2019t matter. <\/b><\/p>\n

We\u2019ll probably start as we have in the Solar System, with automated<\/b> probes. Humans may follow. One percent of the helium-3 fusion fuel available<\/b> from the planet Uranus, for example, would be enough to send a giant<\/b> interstellar ark, each ark containing a billion people, to every star in the<\/b> Galaxy. But it may be cheaper for the probes to manufacture humans in situ,<\/b> using cell synthesis and artificial womb technology. <\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
