One of the unexpected pleasures of editing <\/i> In Dreams is getting a<\/i> story which is totally at right angles to your expectations. For instance,<\/i> from his career to date, you wouldn\u2019t expect Stephen Baxter to write a<\/i> story about Glenn Miller – one of the first superstars of modern popular<\/i> culture to exploit the single as an artform. After all, in only a few years<\/i> Baxter has established a reputation as a writer of Universe-spanning<\/i> hard SF, with a slew of popular stories set in the same future history, and<\/i> a novel, <\/i> Raft, which <\/i> Time Out called \u2018rigorous, vigorous sci-fi [sic] at its<\/i> enjoyable best\u2019. <\/i><\/p>\n

But like all of Baxter\u2019s stories, this one has a solid speculative idea<\/i> at its core. As he explains, \u2018I guess we\u2019ve all had the experience of<\/i> having a fragment of melody lodge in the consciousness and refuse to<\/i> go away . . . It seems to me that one of the sadder aspects of the current<\/i> fragmentation of the popular music scene is the loss of the source of<\/i> such melodies. Once, it seemed, the music of our culture was lodged in<\/i> all our heads; now the music is almost fragmented enough for us to carry<\/i> around our own sub-genres, sharing nothing. <\/i><\/p>\n

\u2018This got me to wondering what would happen if we suddenly<\/i> needed to reassemble our shattered popular culture. And I mean, we<\/i> really needed to . . . The result is \u201cWeep for the Moon\u201d.\u2019<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
