The great horn sounded.<\/p>\n

Arlen paused in his work, looking up at
\nthe lavender wash of the dawn sky. Morning mist still clung to the
\nair, bringing with its damp an acrid taste that was all too familiar.
\nA quiet dread built in his gut as he waited in the morning stillness,
\nhoping that it had been his imagination. He was eleven years old.<\/p>\n

Again the horn was blown, this second
\nnote longer and clearer. Behind Arlen, the door to the house opened,
\nand he knew his mother was there, covering her mouth with both hands.
\nHow many times had this happened, that he could picture her reaction
\nso clearly?<\/p>\n

There was a pause, and then the horn
\nblew twice in rapid succession. One long and two short meant south
\nand east. The Cluster by the Woods. His father had friends amongst
\nthe Cutters.<\/p>\n

Arlen returned to his work, not needing
\nto be told to hurry. Some chores could wait a day, but the stock
\nstill needed to be fed and the cows milked. He left the animals in
\nthe barns and opened the hay stores, slopped the pigs, and ran to
\nfetch a wooden milk bucket. His mother was already squatting beneath
\nthe first of the cows. He snatched the spare stool and they found
\ncadence in their work, the sound of milk striking wood drumming a
\nfuneral march. As they moved to the next pair down the line, Arlen
\nsaw his father begin hitching their strongest horse, a five-year-old
\nchestnut-coloured mare named Missy, to the cart. His face was grim as
\nhe worked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
