Saturday, 2 May 1985, 0748 EET<\/p>\n

“KEN JAMES” STAMPED his feet on the half-frozen dirt, rubbed<\/p>\n

his hands together quickly, then wrapped them around the shaft<\/p>\n

of a big Spaulding softball bat.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>“Cmon, dammit,” he yelled to the tall, lanky kid on the<\/p>\n

pitcher’s mound.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>“Wait,” yelled the pitcher, “Tony Scorcelli.- James made<\/p>\n

a few test swings, hitching up his jacket around his armpits.<\/p>\n

Scorcelli pounded the softball in his glove, then carefully, as<\/p>\n

if trying to toss a ring over a Coke bottle, threw the ball un-<\/p>\n

derhanded toward home plate.<\/p>\n

The ball sailed clear over Ken’s head.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>“What do you call that?” James stepped away from the<\/p>\n

plate, leaned on the bat, shaking his head at Scorcelli.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>The catcher, “Tom Bell,” trotted back to retrieve the ball.<\/p>\n

When he picked’it up from under a clump of quack grass along<\/p>\n

the backstop, he glanced over at the bench, noting the displea-<\/p>\n

sure of the school’s headmaster, “Mr. Roberts,” who was<\/p>\n

making notes on a clipboard. The catcher knew that meant<\/p>\n

trouble.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>All the Academy’s students were serious about these once-<\/p>\n

a-week softball games. Here, even before perestroika, they<\/p>\n

learned competition was necessary, even desirable. Winning<\/p>\n

was all, losing was failure. Every opportunity to prove one’s<\/p>\n

superior leadership, physical and intellectual skills was moni-<\/p>\n

tored and evaluated.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span>“All right,” James said as the catcher, Bell, tossed the ball<\/p>\n
