The evening sky was streaked with
\npurple, the color\u00a0of torn
\nplums, and a light rain had started to fall when I came to the end of
\nthe blacktop road that cut through twenty miles of thick, almost
\nimpenetrable scrub oak and pine and stopped at the front gate of Angola
\npenitentiary. The anti-capital-punishment crowd\u2014priests, nuns in lay
\nclothes, kids from LSU with burning candles cupped in their hands\u2014were
\npraying outside the fence. But another group was there too\u2014a strange
\ncombination of frat boys and rednecks\u2014drinking beer from Styrofoam
\ncoolers filled with cracked ice; they were singing “Glow, Little Glow
\nWorm,” and holding signs that read this
\nbud is for you<\/span>, massina<\/span>
\nand
\njohnny<\/span>, start your own sizzler
\nfranchise today<\/span>.<\/p>\n

“I’m Lieutenant Dave Robicheaux, New Orleans police
\ndepartment,” I said to one of the guards on the gate. I opened my badge
\nfor him.<\/p>\n

“Oh yeah, Lieutenant. I got your name on my clipboard. I’ll
\nride with you up to the Block,” he said, and got in my car. His khaki
\nsleeves were rolled over his sunburned arms, and he had the flat green
\neyes and heavy facial bones of north Louisiana hill people. He smelled
\nfaintly of dried sweat, Red Man, and talcum powder. “I don’t know which
\nbunch bothers me worse. Those religious people act like we’re frying
\nsomebody for a traffic citation, and those boys with the signs must not
\nbe getting much pussy over at the university. You staying for the whole
\nthing?”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
