\u201cThat bell is for me, not for
\nyou. So just sit back down,\u201d the teacher commanded.<\/p>\n

Jake found himself frozen
\nsomewhere in between standing up and sitting down, and behind him
\nhe was sure that he heard the window rattle slightly. Whether it
\nwas from the wind or the power of the teacher\u2019s voice, he couldn\u2019t
\nquite tell.<\/p>\n

One or two of the pupils glanced
\nnervously at each other as the entire class slowly sank back into
\ntheir seats.<\/p>\n

Mr Hamish\u2019s stern face
\nimmediately relaxed. \u201cThank you. Now, I want you to do sections
\nfour, five, and six for homework. Bonus points for anyone who gives
\nsection seven a go as well.\u201d His thick Scottish accent made \u2018well\u2019
\nsound almost indistinguishable from \u2018hell\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cSir, when do you want this done
\nby?\u201d Jake asked, more by automatic reflex than a desire to actually
\nknow and he regretted the question the moment he asked it. A couple
\nof the other pupils looked round at him, their eyes full of
\nimpatience and annoyance at being held back against their will.
\nEveryone else remained transfixed with the towering form in front
\nof them.<\/p>\n

Mr Hamish narrowed his eyes and
\nthought for a second. \u201cNext lesson should be plenty of time. That
\nleaves you all a couple of days, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jake froze in panic. The
\nmonotony of school life meant his timetable was usually printed
\nindelibly in his memory, yet now he couldn\u2019t remember any of
\nit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
