The rising
\nsound of the air raid siren. The hurried rush to safety. The
\nstartled look on his parents\u2019 faces, as they are interrupted
\nmid-sentence. A morsel of food falling from a fork, and plopping
\nback down onto the dinner plate. Sam thought that he would have
\nbeen used to these upsets and interruptions by now. Yet each time,
\nthere was something that made him feel uneasy. Sometimes, it was
\nsomething new. Sometimes, it was something he hadn\u2019t noticed
\nbefore. Sometimes, it was an otherwise innocuous incident. Once it
\nwas because he struggled to put his shoes on. It was a delay of
\nonly a few extra seconds, yet it was enough to unsettle him. In
\nfact it did more than that, it downright terrified him. He could
\nfeel his father\u2019s disappointed gaze burning a hole into the side of
\nhis head. He felt as if his clumsy fumbling had paralysed the
\nentire country.<\/p>\n

Tonight it was
\nhis mother\u2019s indignant cry of \u201cAnother fine dinner ruined!\u201d that
\nroused the butterflies in his stomach. She spat the words out
\nquickly as if her mouth was a misfiring machine gun. They descended
\nthe steps down into the home-made shelter in the back of the
\ngarden, and her heavy footfalls emphasised her words.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo they wait
\nuntil the whole street is sitting down to eat, before they show
\nthemselves? Is blowing half the country to bits not enough for them
\nnow?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
