Frowning, he shut it decisively, thereby excluding any injurious night air! Hercule Poirot had been brought up to believe that all outside air was best left outside, and that night air was especially dangerous to the health.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">As he pulled the curtains neatly over the window and walked to his bed, he smiled tolerantly to himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018<span class=\"italic\">You do see, don\u2019t you, that she\u2019s got to be killed?<\/span>\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Curious words for one Hercule Poirot, detective, to overhear on his first night in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Decidedly, wherever I go, there is something to remind me of crime!\u2019 he murmured to himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">His smile continued as he remembered a story he had once heard concerning Anthony Trollope the novelist. Trollope was crossing the Atlantic at the time and had overheard two fellow passengers discussing the last published installment of one of his novels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Very good,\u2019 one man had declared. \u2018But he ought to kill off that tiresome old woman.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">With a broad smile the novelist had addressed them:<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Gentlemen, I am much obliged to you! I will go and kill her immediately!\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Hercule Poirot wondered what had occasioned the words he had just overheard. A collaboration, perhaps, over a play or a book.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">He thought, still smiling: \u2018Those words might be remembered, one day, and given a more sinister meaning.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">There had been, he now recollected, a curious nervous intensity in the voice\u2014a tremor that spoke of some intense emotional strain. A man\u2019s voice\u2014or a boy\u2019s\u2026<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Hercule Poirot thought to himself as he turned out the light by his bed: \u2018<span class=\"italic\">I should know that voice again<\/span>\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"chapterHeadA\">II<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paraNoIndent\">Their elbows on the window-sill, their heads close together, Raymond and Carol Boynton gazed out into the blue depths of the night. Nervously, Raymond repeated his former words: \u2018You do see, don\u2019t you, that she\u2019s got to be killed?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Carol Boynton stirred slightly. She said, her voice deep and hoarse: \u2018It\u2019s horrible\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018It\u2019s not more horrible than <span class=\"italic\">this<\/span>!\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018I suppose not\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Raymond said violently: \u2018It can\u2019t go on like this\u2014it can\u2019t\u2026We <span class=\"italic\">must<\/span> do something\u2026And there isn\u2019t anything else we <span class=\"italic\">can<\/span> do\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Carol said\u2014but her voice was unconvincing and she knew it: \u2018If we could get away somehow\u2014?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018We can\u2019t.\u2019 His voice was empty and hopeless. \u2018Carol, you know we can\u2019t\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">The girl shivered. \u2018I know, Ray\u2014I know.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">He gave a sudden short, bitter laugh.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018People would say we were crazy\u2014not to be able just to walk out\u2014\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Carol said slowly: \u2018Perhaps we\u2014are crazy!\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018I dare say. Yes, I dare say we are. Anyway, we soon shall be\u2026I suppose some people would say we are already\u2014here we are calmly planning, in cold blood, to kill our own mother!\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Carol said sharply: \u2018She isn\u2019t our own mother!\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018No, that\u2019s true.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">There was a pause and then Raymond said, his voice now quietly matter-of-fact: \u2018You do agree, Carol?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Carol answered steadily: \u2018I think she ought to die\u2014yes\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Then she broke out suddenly: \u2018She\u2019s mad\u2026I\u2019m quite sure she\u2019s mad\u2026She\u2014she couldn\u2019t torture us like she does if she were sane. For years we\u2019ve been saying: \u201c<span class=\"italic\">This can\u2019t go on!<\/span>\u201d and it <span class=\"italic\">has<\/span> gone on! We\u2019ve said, \u201c<span class=\"italic\">She\u2019ll die some time<\/span>\u201d\u2014but she hasn\u2019t died! I don\u2019t think she ever will die unless\u2014\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Raymond said steadily: \u2018<span class=\"italic\">Unless we kill her<\/span>\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Yes.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">She clenched her hands on the window-sill in front of her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Her brother went on in a cool, matter-of-fact tone, with just a slight tremor denoting his deep underlying excitement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018You see why it\u2019s got to be one of us, don\u2019t you? With Lennox, there\u2019s Nadine to consider. And we couldn\u2019t bring Jinny into it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Carol shivered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Poor Jinny\u2026I\u2019m so afraid\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018I know. It\u2019s getting pretty bad, isn\u2019t it? That\u2019s why something\u2019s got to be done quickly\u2014before she goes right over the edge.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Carol stood up suddenly, pushing back the tumbled chestnut hair from her forehead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Ray,\u2019 she said, \u2018you don\u2019t think it\u2019s really <span class=\"italic\">wrong<\/span>, do you?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">He answered in that same would-be dispassionate tone. \u2018No. I think it\u2019s just like killing a mad dog\u2014something that\u2019s doing harm in the world and must be stopped. This is the only way of stopping it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Carol murmured: \u2018But they\u2019d\u2014they\u2019d send us to the chair just the same\u2026I mean we couldn\u2019t explain what she\u2019s like\u2026It would sound fantastic\u2026In a way, you know, it\u2019s all in our own <span class=\"italic\">minds<\/span>!\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Raymond said: \u2018Nobody will ever know. I\u2019ve got a plan. I\u2019ve thought it all out. We shall be quite safe.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Carol turned suddenly round on him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Ray\u2014somehow or another\u2014you\u2019re different. Something\u2019s <span class=\"italic\">happened<\/span> to you\u2026What\u2019s put all this into your head?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Why should you think anything\u2019s happened to me?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">He turned his head away, staring out into the night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Because it has\u2026Ray, was it that girl on the train?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018No, of course not\u2014why should it be? Oh, Carol, don\u2019t talk nonsense. Let\u2019s get back again to\u2014to\u2014\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018To your plan? Are you sure it\u2019s a\u2014good plan?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Yes. I think so\u2026We must wait for the right opportunity, of course. And then\u2014if it goes all right\u2014we shall be free\u2014all of us.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Free?\u2019 Carol gave a little sigh. She looked up at the stars. Then suddenly she shook from head to foot in a sudden storm of weeping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Carol, what\u2019s the matter?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">She sobbed out brokenly: \u2018It\u2019s so lovely\u2014the night and the blueness and the stars. If only we could be part of it all\u2026If only we could be like other people instead of being as we are\u2014all queer and warped and <span class=\"italic\">wrong<\/span>.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018But we shall be\u2014all right\u2014when she\u2019s dead!\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Are you <span class=\"italic\">sure<\/span>? Isn\u2019t it too late? Shan\u2019t we always be queer and different?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018No, no, no.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018I wonder\u2014\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Carol, if you\u2019d rather not\u2014\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">She pushed his comforting arm aside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018No, I\u2019m with you\u2014definitely I\u2019m with you! Because of the others\u2014especially Jinny. We <span class=\"italic\">must<\/span> save Jinny!\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">Raymond paused a moment. \u2018Then\u2014we\u2019ll go on with it?\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Yes!\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"para\">\u2018Good.
