She produced the word rather with the effect of a bad-tempered explosion.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d said Tommy.<\/p>\n

Tuppence looked across the room at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said \u2018books,\u2019\u00a0\u201d\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see what you mean,\u201d said Thomas Beresford.<\/p>\n

In front of Tuppence were three large packing cases. From each of them various books had been extracted. The larger part of them were still filled with books.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s incredible,\u201d said Tuppence.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou mean the room they take up?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you trying to put them all on the shelves?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what I\u2019m trying to do,\u201d said Tuppence. \u201cThat\u2019s the awkward part of it. One doesn\u2019t know ever, exactly, what one wants to do. Oh dear,\u201d she sighed.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally,\u201d said her husband, \u201cI should have thought that that was not at all characteristic of you. The trouble with you has always been that you knew much too well what you do<\/span> want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I mean is,\u201d said Tuppence, \u201cthat here we are, getting older, getting a bit\u2014well, let\u2019s face it\u2014definitely rheumatic, especially when one is stretching; you know, stretching putting in books or lifting things down from shelves or kneeling down to look at the bottom shelves for something, then finding it a bit difficult to get up again.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
