and oilskin enclosed him. A dirty harbor tug pushed his<\/p>\n

submarine\u2019s bow around to the north, facing down the<\/p>\n

channel. The dock that had held his Red October for<\/p>\n

two interminable months was now a water-fil ed<\/p>\n

concrete box, one of the many special y built to shelter<\/p>\n

strategic missile submarines from the harsh elements. On<\/p>\n

its edge a col ection of sailors and dockyard workers<\/p>\n

watched his ship sail in stolid Russian fashion, without a<\/p>\n

\u201cEngines ahead slow, Kamarov,\u201d he ordered. The tug<\/p>\n

slid out of the way, and Ramius glanced aft to see the<\/p>\n

water stirring from the force of the twin bronze<\/p>\n

propel ers. The tug\u2019s commander waved. Ramius<\/p>\n

returned the gesture. The tug had done a simple job, <\/p>\n

but done it quickly and wel . The Red October, a<\/p>\n

Typhoon-class sub, moved under her own power<\/p>\n

towards the main ship channel of the Kola Fjord. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s Purga, Captain.\u201d Gregoriy Kamarov pointed<\/p>\n

to the icebreaker that would escort them to sea. <\/p>\n

Ramius nodded. The two hours required to transit the<\/p>\n

channel would tax not his seamanship but his<\/p>\n
