\u201cYou can\u2019t leave now,\u201d Daniel Holm told his son. \u201cAny day we may be at war. We may already be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s just why I have to go,\u201d the young man answered. \u201cThey\u2019re calling Khruaths about it around the curve of the planet. Where else should I fare than to my choth?\u201d<\/p>\n

When he spoke thus, more than his wording became bird. The very accent changed. He was no longer using the Planha-influenced Anglic of Avalon\u2014pure vowels, r\u2019s trilled, m\u2019s and n\u2019s and ng\u2019s almost hummed, speech deepened and slowed and strongly cadenced; rather, it was as if he were trying to translate for a human listener the thought of an Ythrian brain.<\/p>\n

The man whose image occupied the phone screen did not retort, \u201cYou might consider staying with your own family,\u201d as once he would have. Instead Daniel Holm nodded, and said quietly, \u201cI see. You\u2019re not Chris now, you\u2019re Arinnian,\u201d and all at once looked old.<\/p>\n

That wrenched at the young man. He reached forth, but his fingers were stopped by the screen, \u201cI\u2019m always Chris, Dad,\u201d he blurted. \u201cIt\u2019s only that I\u2019m Arinnian too. And, and, well, if war comes, the choths will need to be prepared for it, won\u2019t they? I\u2019m going to help\u2014shouldn\u2019t be gone long, really.\u201d<\/p>\n
