M<\/span>ei?\u201d Miss Carrie said. \u201cPlease put your painting work away now. Your mother is here.\u201d <\/p>\n

It took her a few seconds to understand what the teacher was saying, not because Mei didn\u2019t know the words\u2014she was four now, and not a toddler anymore\u2014but because they didn\u2019t fit with the world as she knew it. Her mother couldn\u2019t come get her. Mommy had left Ganymede and gone to live on Ceres Station, because, as her daddy put it, she needed some mommy-alone-time. Then, her heart starting to race, Mei thought, She came back<\/span>. <\/p>\n

From where Mei sat at her scaled-down easel, Miss Carrie\u2019s knee blocked her view of the coatroom door. Mei\u2019s hands were sticky with finger paints, red and blue and green swirling on her palms. She shifted forward and grabbed for Miss Carrie\u2019s leg as much to move it as to help her stand up. <\/p>\n

\u201cMei!\u201d Miss Carrie shouted. <\/p>\n

Mei looked at the smear of paint on Miss Carrie\u2019s pants and the controlled anger on the woman\u2019s broad, dark face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Miss Carrie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay,\u201d the teacher said in a tight voice that meant it wasn\u2019t, really, but Mei wasn\u2019t going to be punished. \u201cPlease go wash your hands and then come put away your painting work. I\u2019ll get this down and you can give it to your mother. It is a doggie?\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
