\nthe Riftwar against the Tsurani, alien invaders from the world of
\nKelewan, peace reigned in the Kingdom of the Isles for nearly a year.
\nKing Lyam and his brothers, Prince Arutha and Duke Martin, toured the
\neastern cities and neighbouring kingdoms, then returned to Lyam\u2019s
\ncapital at Rillanon. The Princess Carline, their sister, gave an
\nultimatum to her lover, Laurie the minstrel: wed her or leave the
\npalace. Arutha and Princess Anita became engaged, and plans were made
\nfor their wedding in Krondor, Arutha\u2019s city.<\/i><\/p>\n

When Arutha
\nfinally returned to Krondor, late one night, Jimmy the Hand, a boy
\nthief, stumbled across and foiled a Nighthawk, an assassin, whose
\ntarget was Arutha. It was a standing order among the Mockers that all
\nnews of the Nighthawks be reported at once. Jimmy became confused
\nabout where his loyalty lay, with the Mockers -the Guild of Thieves –
\nor with Arutha, whom he had known the year before. Before he could
\ndecide, Jimmy was set up for murder by Laughing Jack, an officer in
\nthe Mockers, proof Jack was in league with the Nighthawks. During the
\nambush, Jimmy was wounded and Laughing Jack killed. Jimmy then
\ndecided to warn Arutha.<\/i><\/p>\n

Warned of the
\nplot, Arutha, Laurie and Jimmy trapped two assassins and imprisoned
\nthem in the palace. Arutha discovered the Nighthawks were somehow
\nconnected to the temple of the Death Goddess, Lims-Kragma. He ordered
\nthe High Priestess to attend him, but by the time she arrived one of
\nthe assassins had died and the other was dying. She sought to
\ndiscover how her temple had been infiltrated by the Nighthawks. Upon
\ndying, one of the captured Nighthawks was revealed as a magically
\ndisguised moredhel, a dark elf. The now dead creature rose up, called
\nupon his master, Murmandamus, and attacked the High Priestess and
\nArutha. Only the magic intervention of Arutha\u2019s adviser Father
\nNathan balked the otherwise unkillable creature.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
