Walls darkened with years of fireplace soot drank in the
\nlantern light, reflecting dim illumination. The dying fire in the
\nhearth offered scant warmth and, from the demeanour of those who
\nchose to sit before it, less cheer. In contrast to the mood of
\nmost establishments of its ilk, this inn was nearly sombre. In
\nmurky corners, men spoke in hushed tones, discussing things best
\nnot overheard by the uninvolved. A grunt of agreement to a
\nwhispered proposal or a bitter laugh from a woman of negotiable
\nvirtue were the only sounds to intrude upon the silence. The
\nmajority of the denizens of the inn called the Sleeping Dockman
\nwere closely watching the game.<\/p>\n

The game was pokiir<\/em>, common to the Empire of Great
\nKesh to the south and now replacing lin-lan<\/em> and
\npashawa<\/em> as the gambler\u2019s choice in the inns and
\ntaverns of the Western Realm of the Kingdom. One player held his
\nfive cards before him, his eyes narrowed in concentration. An
\noff-duty soldier, he kept alert for any sign of trouble in the
\nroom, and trouble was rapidly approaching. He made a display of
\nstudying his cards, while discreetly inspecting the five men who
\nplayed at the table with him.<\/p>\n

The first two on the left were rough men. Both were sunburned
\nand the hands holding their cards were heavily callused; faded
\nlinen shirts and cotton trousers hung loosely on lank but
\nmuscular frames. Neither wore boots or even sandals, barefoot
\ndespite the cool night air, a certain sign they were sailors
\nwaiting for a new berth. Usually such men quickly lost their pay
\nand were bound again for sea, but from the way they had bet all
\nnight, the soldier was certain they were working for the man who
\nsat to the soldier\u2019s right.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
