\u201cJon-Tom, there\u2019s someone in the tree.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the abyss of deep rest he replied. \u201cHuh\u2014what?\u201d<\/p>\n

Feminine fingers imprinted themselves on the flesh of his shoulder. \u201cI said there\u2019s someone in the tree\u201d The voice was sharp, melodious, familiar, as well it should have been.<\/p>\n

Extending himself mightily, he opened one eye. Moonlight gilded the branches of his home and those of the bell trees that surrounded the glade of oaks. Morning was conspicuous by its absence, nor was there any indication that the sun intended to put in an appearance any time soon. He listened intently.<\/p>\n

\u201cGo back to sleep, Talea.\u201d He turned over slowly. \u201cThere\u2019s no one in the tree.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot our tree, idiot!\u201dshe whispered huskily. \u201cOld hard-shell\u2019s tree.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course there\u2019s someone inside Clothahump\u2019s tree.\u201d <\/p>\n

He told his mind to go back to sleep. His subconscious laughed at him. \u201cClothahump and Sorbl.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe wizard sleeps the sleep of the dead and I know what Sorbl sounds like when he\u2019s drunk. This is different, Jon-Tom. Trust me, I know sounds in the night.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sat up, rubbed his eyes. \u201cFrom stalking innocent citizens in dark alleys, no doubt.\u201d<\/p>\n

She punched him in the ribs. \u201cDon\u2019t be funny. I\u2019ve put those days behind me. I\u2019m serious, Jon-Tom.\u201d She looked toward the window that punctured the tree wall. \u201cI don\u2019t know how you can sleep through that racket anyway. They\u2019ve been screaming and snouting over there for half an hour. Naturally now that you\u2019re awake they\u2019ve stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
