A Duke, however, <span class=\"italic\">is<\/span> addressed as \u201cYour Grace,\u201d and a Duke\u2019s younger son(s) addressed as \u201cLord____.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"calibre1\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"calibre17\">\u2026Mr. Horace Walpole, that inveterate correspondent whose witty and detailed letters provided me with a vivid window into eighteenth-century society.<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"calibre1\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"calibre17\">\u2026Project Gutenberg, for providing me with excellent access to the complete correspondence of Mr. Walpole.<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"calibre1\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"calibre17\">\u2026Gus the dachshund, and Otis Stout the pug (aka \u201cHercules\u201d), who generously allowed the use of their personae. Badgers have been around for a long time.)<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"calibre1\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"calibre17\">\u2026Christine Reynolds, Assistant Keeper of the Muniments of the Parish Church of St. Margaret\u2019s, for extremely useful information regarding the history and structures of the church, including a very useful organ loft under which to give birth, and Catherine MacGregor for suggesting St. Margaret\u2019s and for finding Ms. Reynolds.<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"calibre1\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"calibre17\">\u2026Patricia Fuller, Paulette Langguth, Pamela Patchet, pamelalass, and doubtless several other people <span class=\"italic\">not<\/span> beginning with \u201cP,\u201d for information regarding eighteenth-century public exhibitions of art, and the history of specific artists and paintings.<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"calibre1\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"calibre17\">\u2026Philip Larkin, whose remarkably revealing portrait of the first Duke of Buckingham (presently displayed in the Royal Portrait Gallery in London) provided one of the first seeds of inspiration for this book. Also, George MacDonald Fraser, for his <span class=\"italic\">MacAuslan in the Rough,<\/span> a collection of stories about life in a WWII Highland Regiment.<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"calibre1\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"calibre17\">\u2026Isaac Trion, whose hand-drawn watercolor map of the battle of Crefeld, drawn in 1758, adorns my wall, and whose painstaking details adorn the story.<\/p>\n<p><br class=\"calibre1\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"calibre17\">\u2026The assorted gentlemen (and ladies) who were kind enough to read and comment on sex scenes.
