Cyrus
\n\tjumped, almost falling off his donkey. “Who said that?”<\/p>\n

“Get
\n\tthee to a nunnery.”<\/p>\n

This
\n\ttime he placed the source. “You’re talking!” he said to
\n\tthe donkey.<\/p>\n

“Who
\n\tsaid that?” the animal said. “You’re talking.”<\/p>\n

“You’re
\n\trepeating whatever you have heard most recently,” Cyrus said,
\n\tcatching on. “That voice unit was supposed to be for braying.
\n\tHow can you speak words?”<\/p>\n

“Defective
\n\tworkmanship,” the donkey said. “You installed the wrong
\n\tunit.”<\/p>\n

Cyrus
\n\tsighed. So using lead instead of iron wasn’t his only error when he
\n\tconstructed the donkey. When the mechanical animal was too heavy lo
\n\tfunction effectively, Cyrus’s father Roland had given him blunt
\n\tadvice: remove the lead. So he had done so, and had a robot animal
\n\the could ride.<\/p>\n

“Who
\n\tsaid the other?” he asked, “About the nunnery. That’s like
\n\ta monastery, isn’t it?”<\/p>\n

“Your
\n\tbarbarian mother said it,” the donkey
\n\tanswered. “You weren’t paying attention. She was not referring
\n\tto nuns.”<\/p>\n

“Not.
\n\tAccording to my defective data bank, it’s old Mundanian slang for a
\n\thouse of ill repute.”<\/p>\n

“What
\n\tis that? I never heard of an ill house.”<\/p>\n

“Naturally
\n\tyou wouldn’t know. You were created halfway innocent, for some
\n\tobscure reason. But she thought it would make a man of you.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
