Kody woke when the nurse came into his hospital room. He felt awful. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, you\u2019re awake,\u201d the nurse said. \u201cThe doctor will be with you shortly. Now if you will just sign this admittance paper, your insurance will cover it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d he repeated as her hand guided his numb fingers for the signature.<\/p>\n

She glanced at him sympathetically. \u201cYou don\u2019t remember?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t,\u201d he agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were in an accident. A bad one. But they got you here in time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe doctor will explain. Meanwhile this will relax you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t\u2014\u201d But she was already giving him a dose via the IV hooked to his arm. He had no choice but to fade out.<\/p>\n

When Kody woke again, he was cautious about speaking. He wanted to know more about his situation before they dosed him. He had been in an accident? It must have been a bad one, because his whole body felt washed out. Had a drunk driver hit him? Then what about his car? Was it suffering similarly?<\/p>\n

The nurse, morbidly attuned, knew he was awake. \u201cJust in time for the doctor,\u201d she said briskly, as if that was all that mattered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to know\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot now,\u201d she said with impersonal efficiency. \u201cHe\u2019s here.\u201d<\/p>\n

So much for any preference he might have. This was, after all, a hospital; they had better things to do than chat with patients.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
