The Beginning (of the End)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo What are you good at, exactly, anyway? I mean, I know you\u2019re good at everything, but what are you so<\/span> good at besides languages?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m good with codes and stuff. And I\u2019m good at, like, linguistic tricks like anagramming. That\u2019s my favorite thing, really. I can anagram anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnything?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNight, nay,\u201d he answered quickly, and she laughed and then said, \u201cKatherine Carter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUm, okay. Her karate cretin\u2014um, oh. I like this one: their arcane trek.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed and pulled her hand away and placed it flat against his knee. Her fingers were soft. He could suddenly smell her over the dank basement. She smelled like lilacs, and then he knew that it was almost time. But he didn\u2019t dare look at her, not yet. He just watched the blank TV screen. He wanted to draw out the moment before the moment\u2014because as good as kissing feels, nothing feels as good as the anticipation of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you do<\/span> that?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cPractice, mostly. I\u2019ve been doing it a long time. I see the letters and pull out a good word first\u2014like, karate, or arcane\u2014and then I try to use the remaining letters to make\u2014oh God, this is boring,\u201d he said, hoping it w a sn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, so anagrams. That\u2019s one. Got any other charming talents?\u201d she asked, and now he felt confident.<\/p>\n

Finally, Colin turned to her, gathering in his gut the slim measure of courage available to him, and said, \u201cWell, I\u2019m a fair kisser.\u201d<\/p>\n
