It\u2019s supposed to be a good time, so I do not wish to steal anyone\u2019s marshmallows by telling them they\u2019re \u201csaying it wrong.\u201d However, for those readers who place a premium on accuracy, I have provided an informal guide to some names and words that may be a bit confusing for English readers, since Irish phonetics aren\u2019t necessarily those of English. One thing to keep in mind is that diacritical marks above the vowels do not indicate a stressed syllable but rather a certain vowel sound.<\/p>\n<div class=\"hanging\">\n<p class=\"hanging\">Aenghus \u00d3g = Angus OHG (long <em>o<\/em>, as in <em>doe<\/em>, not short <em>o<\/em>, as in <em>log<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"hanging\">Airmid = AIR mit<\/p>\n<p class=\"hanging\">Bres = Bress<\/p>\n<p class=\"hanging\">Brighid = BRI yit (or close to BREE yit) in Old Irish. Modern Irish has changed this to Br\u00edd (pronounced like Breed), changing the vowel sound and eliminating the <em>g<\/em> entirely because English speakers kept pronouncing the <em>g<\/em> with a <em>j<\/em> sound.
