Let it be known from the beginning that readers are free to pronounce the names in this book however they see fit. It\u2019s supposed to be a good time, so I do not wish to steal anyone\u2019s marshmallows by telling them they\u2019re \u201csaying it wrong.\u201d However, for those readers who place a premium on accuracy, I have provided an informal guide to some names and words that may be a bit confusing for English readers, since Irish phonetics aren\u2019t necessarily those of English. One thing to keep in mind is that diacritical marks above the vowels do not indicate a stressed syllable but rather a certain vowel sound.<\/p>\n

Aenghus \u00d3g = Angus OHG (long o<\/em>, as in doe<\/em>, not short o<\/em>, as in log<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Airmid = AIR mit<\/p>\n

Bres = Bress<\/p>\n

Brighid = BRI yit (or close to BREE yit) in Old Irish. Modern Irish has changed this to Br\u00edd (pronounced like Breed), changing the vowel sound and eliminating the g<\/em> entirely because English speakers kept pronouncing the g<\/em> with a j<\/em> sound. Names like Bridget are Anglicized versions of the original Irish name<\/p>\n

Cairbre = CAR bre, where you kind of roll the r<\/em> and the e<\/em> is pronounced as in egg<\/em><\/p>\n

Conaire = KON uh ra<\/p>\n

C\u00fachulainn = Koo HOO lin (the Irish ch<\/em> is pronounced like an h<\/em> low in the throat, like a Spanish j<\/em>, never with a hard k<\/em> sound or as in the English chew<\/em>)<\/p>\n

Dian Cecht = DEE an KAY<\/p>\n

Fianna = Fee AH na<\/p>\n

Finn Mac Cumhaill = FIN mac COO will<\/p>\n

Flidais = FLIH dish<\/p>\n

Fragarach = FRAG ah rah<\/p>\n

Granuaile = GRAWN ya WALE<\/p>\n

Lugh L\u00e1mhfhada = Loo LAW wah duh<\/p>\n

Manannan Mac Lir = MAH nah NON mac LEER<\/p>\n

Miach = ME ah<\/p>\n

Mogh Nuadhat = Moh NU ah dah<\/p>\n

Moralltach = MOR ul TAH<\/p>\n

\u00d3 Suileabh\u00e1in = Oh SULL uh ven (pronounced like O\u2019Sullivan, it\u2019s just the Irish spelling)<\/p>\n

Siodhachan = SHE ya han (remember the guttural h<\/em> for the Irish ch;<\/em> don\u2019t go near a hard k<\/em> sound)<\/p>\n
