I think it\u2019s cool if you read the unusual names in my books however you want. There won\u2019t be a test afterward and I\u2019m not going to withhold a Twinkie from you if you pronounce any of them incorrectly. You\u2019re supposed to have fun here, after all, and it\u2019s usually not fun if someone tells you that you\u2019re doing it wrong. But I like to provide these in case you want to master those names and enjoy the Druids\u2019 globetrotting. So here we go; caps-lock bits indicate stressed syllables.\u2026<\/p>\n

OLD NORSE<\/p>\n

Erlendr = EHR len dur (Not quite AIR lend ur, but close. A bit more like a short e<\/em> on that first syllable.)<\/p>\n

Freyd\u00eds = FRAY deece<\/p>\n

Hildr = HILL dur (Female name still used today in Iceland and Norway, but in modern spelling they go ahead and indicate the last vowel, like Hildur<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

\u00cds\u00f3lfr = EES ol vur (The first syllable should rhyme with fleece<\/em>, not ease<\/em>. The o<\/em> is a long oh<\/em>, you know. And an f<\/em> in the middle is kinda soft, so it sounds like a v<\/em>.)<\/p>\n

Kr\u00f3kr Hrafnson = KROH kur HRABn son (Hrafn = raven. Difficult to get this right in English. There\u2019s that aspirated Hr<\/em> at the beginning and then the problematic fn<\/em>. In modern Icelandic it\u2019s pronounced like a bn<\/em> or simply a b<\/em>, but we\u2019re unsure precisely how it was spoken in Old Norse. In the old days it may have been HRAV son. From poetry scanning we know that there wasn\u2019t a vowel sound between the f<\/em> and n<\/em>, so this is supposed to be a two-syllable word, but maybe with a hint of n<\/em> in the middle.)<\/p>\n

Oddr\u00fan = ODD rune (Female name still used today in Iceland. Bonus points if you roll the r<\/em> a bit.)<\/p>\n

Sk\u00fafr = SKOO vur (Again with the soft f<\/em> thing.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
