But I like learning new words and how to say them, so I\u2019m providing a wee guide here for a few names and such in case you\u2019re of a like mind and want to know how to say them out loud. No one is going to confiscate your cake if you say them wrong, but you might score a piece of cake if you say them right. You know what? You should just have a piece of cake anyway. You deserve cake.<\/p>\n<h1 class=\"para-ulh\">Czech<\/h1>\n<div>\n<p class=\"para-ulf\">Celetn\u00e1 = TSELL et NAH (A street in Prague)<\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ul\">Kr\u00e1lodvorsk\u00e1 = KRAH loh DVOR skah (A street in Prague)<\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ul\">Pet<span class=\"char-dcrit\">\u0159<\/span>\u00edn = PET shreen (A hill on the castle side of Prague) <\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ul\">Ulice = oo LEE tse (Means <em class=\"char-i\">street<\/em>, basically. Interesting fact: The word is the same in Polish but they place it in front of the name and the Czechs put it afterward. So if you were speaking of Main Street, in Polish that would be <em class=\"char-i\">Ulice Main<\/em> and in Czech it\u2019s <em class=\"char-i\">Main Ulice.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ull\">Vltava = Vl TAH vah (Big ol\u2019 river that runs through Prague)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h1 class=\"para-ulh\">Polish<\/h1>\n<div>\n<p class=\"para-ulf\">Agnieszka = ag nee ESH ka (One of the Polish coven)<\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ul\">Bydgoszcz = bid GOSH-CH (City in Poland. I straight up admit to choosing it just to cause panic in my audiobook narrator. To English-speaking eyes those four consonants at the end look alarming. But they are actually two distinct digraphs that linguistically represent a fricative followed by an affricative: <em class=\"char-i\">sz<\/em> and <em class=\"char-i\">cz<\/em>. The <em class=\"char-i\">sz<\/em> is going to get you something like <em class=\"char-i\">sh<\/em> and the <em class=\"char-i\">cz<\/em> gives you <em class=\"char-i\">ch<\/em>. But when you pronounce that it\u2019s all one syllable. Try it! GOSH-CH. Seriously fun.)<\/p>\n<p><span epub:type=\"pagebreak\" id=\"pagexi\" title=\"xi\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ul\">Ewelina = ev eh LEE na (One of the Polish coven. The letter <em class=\"char-i\">w<\/em> is pronounced like <em class=\"char-i\">v<\/em> in Polish.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ul\">Mi<span class=\"char-dcrit\">\u0142<\/span>osz = ME wash (The white horse of <span class=\"char-dcrit\">\u015a<\/span>wi<span class=\"char-dcrit\">\u0119<\/span>towit. That spiffy <span class=\"char-dcrit-i\"><em class=\"char-dcrit-i\">\u0142<\/em><\/span> is pronounced as a <em class=\"char-i\">w<\/em> in Polish. And that <em class=\"char-i\">o<\/em> is pronounced like the <em class=\"char-i\">a<\/em> in <em class=\"char-i\">wash<\/em>, so there you have it.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ul\">Nocnica = nohts NEETS uh (Slavic nightmare creature; nocnice, pl.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ul\">Patrycja = pa TREES ya (One of the Polish coven. Basically as in <em class=\"char-i\">Patricia<\/em> but with a long <em class=\"char-i\">e<\/em> sound and no <em class=\"char-i\">sh.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ul\">Pole Mokotowskie = PO leh Mo ko TOV ski-eh (An expansive park in the city of Warsaw.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ul\">Rado<span class=\"char-dcrit\">\u015b\u0107<\/span> = Rah DOHSH-CH (Translates to <em class=\"char-i\">joy<\/em>. A neighborhood in one of Warsaw\u2019s districts, on the east side of the Wis<span class=\"char-dcrit\">\u0142<\/span>a River.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ul\"><span class=\"char-dcrit\">\u015a<\/span>wi<span class=\"char-dcrit\">\u0119<\/span>towit = SHVEN toe veet (That cool little <span class=\"char-dcrit-i\"><em class=\"char-dcrit-i\">\u0119<\/em><\/span> indicates an <em class=\"char-i\">n<\/em> sound at the end of the vowel. Slavic god with four heads.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ul\">Weles = VEH les (Spelled as <em class=\"char-i\">Veles<\/em> in most other Slavic countries but the pronunciation is nearly universal. Slavic deity of the earth, enemy of Perun.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ul\">Wis<span class=\"char-dcrit\">\u0142<\/span>a = Vee SWAH (River that runs right through the center of Warsaw.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"para-ull\">Wis<span class=\"char-dcrit\">\u0142<\/span>awa Szymborska = Vee SWAH vah Shim BOR ska (Polish Nobel Prize winner for literature.
