\nyou these for tuppence,\u201d my granpa would shout, holding up a cabbage in both
\nhands, \u201cI don\u2019t offer \u2018em for a penny, not even a ha\u2019penny. No, I\u2019ll give \u2018em
\naway for a farthin\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Those
\nwere the first words I can remember. Even before I had learned to walk, my
\neldest sister used to dump me in an orange box on the pavement next to Granpa\u2019s
\npitch just to be sure I could start my apprenticeship early.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOnly
\nstakin\u2019 \u2018is claim,\u201d Granpa used to tell the customers as he pointed at me in
\nthe wooden box. In truth, the first word I ever spoke was \u201cGranpa,\u201d the second \u201cfarthing,\u201d
\nand I could repeat his whole sales patter word for word by my third birthday.
\nNot that any of my family could be that certain of the exact day on which I was
\nborn, on account of the fact that my old man had spent the night in jail and my
\nmother had died even before I drew breath.<\/span><\/p>\n

Granpa
\nthought it could well have been a Saturday, felt it most likely the month had
\nbeen January, was confident the year was 1900, and knew it was in the reign of
\nQueen Victoria. So we settled on Saturday, 20 January 1900.<\/span><\/p>\n

I
\nnever knew my mother because, as I explained, she died on the day I was born. \u201cChildbirth,\u201d
\nour local priest called it, but I didn\u2019t really understand what he was on about
\nuntil several years later when I came up against the problem again. Father O\u2019Malley
\nnever stopped telling me that she was a saint if ever he\u2019d seen one. My father
\nwho couldn\u2019t have been described as a saint by anyone worked on the docks by
\nday, lived in the pub at night and came home in the early morning because it
\nwas the only place he could fall asleep without being disturbed.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
