The signpost
\nannounces North Sea Camp, one mile. As we approach the entrance to the prison,
\nthe first thing that strikes me is that there are no electric gates, no high
\nwalls and no razor wire.<\/p>\n

I am released from
\nmy sweat box and walk into reception, where I am greeted by an officer. Mr Daff
\nhas a jolly smile and a military air. He promises that after Wayland, this will
\nbe more like Butlins. \u2018In fact,\u2019 he adds, \u2018there\u2019s a Butlins just up the road
\nin Skegness. The only difference is,<\/span> they\u2019ve got a
\nwall around them.\u2019<\/p>\n

Here, Mr Daff
\nexplains, the walls are replaced by roll-calls \u2013 7.30 am, 11.45 am, 3.30 pm,
\n8.15 pm and 10.00 pm, when I must present myself to the spur office: a whole
\nnew regime to become accustomed to.<\/p>\n

While Mr Daff
\ncompletes the paperwork, I unpack my HMP plastic bags. He barks that I will
\nonly be allowed to wear prison garb, so all my T-shirts are taken away and
\nplaced in a possessions box marked ARCHER FF8282.<\/p>\n

Dean, a prison
\norderly helps me. Once all my belongings have been checked, he escorts me to my
\nroom \u2013 please note, room, not cell.<\/p>\n

At NSC,
\nprisoners have their own key, and there are no bars on the windows. So far so good.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, I\u2019m
\nback to sharing with another prisoner. My room-mate is David. He doesn\u2019t turn
\nthe music down when I walk in, and a rolled-up cigarette doesn\u2019t leave his
\nmouth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
