S<\/span><\/b>usan plonked<\/span> the ice cream firmly on Michael Cartwright\u2019s head.
\nIt was the first occasion the two of them had met, or that was what Michael\u2019s
\nbest man claimed when Susan and Michael were married twenty-one years later.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both
\nof them were three years old at the time, and when Michael burst into tears,
\nSusan\u2019s mother rushed over to find out what the problem was. All Susan was
\nwilling to say on the subject, and she repeated it several times, was, \u201cWell,
\nhe asked for it, didn\u2019t he?\u201d Susan ended up with a spanking. Not the ideal
\nstart for any romance.<\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nnext recorded meeting, according to the best man, was when they both arrived at
\ntheir elementary school.<\/span><\/p>\n

Susan
\ndeclared with a knowing air that Michael was a cry-baby, and what\u2019s
\nmore, a sneak<\/span>. Michael told the other boys that he would share his
\ngraham crackers with anyone who was willing to pull Susan Illingworth\u2019s
\npigtails. Few boys tried a second time.<\/span><\/p>\n

At
\nthe end of their first year, Susan and Michael were jointly awarded the class
\nprize. Their teacher considered it the best course of action if she hoped to
\nprevent another ice-cream incident. Susan told her friends that Michael\u2019s mother
\ndid his homework for him, to which Michael responded that at least it was in
\nhis own handwriting.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
