I<\/span> DON\u2019T KNOW WHO<\/span> was more anxious\u2014Daniel or Kenjii\u2014but they weren\u2019t making this emergency helicopter evacuation any easier. I patted Kenjii and she shifted until her full hundred pounds of German shepherd rested squarely on my feet. When I tried to wriggle away, she moved closer and pinned my legs. I sighed and glanced at Daniel. He was staring out the window, fingers drumming.<\/p>\n

I twisted to look at the others. Daniel and I were in the first passenger row, behind the pilot and Mayor Tillson, who was in the copilot\u2019s seat. Behind us were the mayor\u2019s daughter, Nicole, and his niece, Sam Russo, gazing out their respective windows. Hayley Morris and Corey Carling sat in the last row. Hayley was talking; Corey wasn\u2019t listening.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going north.\u201d Daniel had to yell to Mayor Tillson to be heard over the helicopter noise. \u201cWe\u2019re supposed to be heading to Victoria, aren\u2019t we?\u201d<\/p>\n

When the mayor didn\u2019t respond, the pilot said, \u201cChange of plans, son. Victoria\u2019s backed up with evacuees. We\u2019re taking you to Vancouver.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOkay, so why are we heading north?<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n

We live on Vancouver Island, near Nanaimo, which is almost directly west across the Strait of Georgia from the city of Vancouver, British Columbia.<\/p>\n

\u201cWind,\u201d the pilot said. \u201cSame one that\u2019s driving that fire is forcing us to circle north. Don\u2019t worry. I\u2019ll have you there in an hour.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
