\u201cOne lump or two, darling?\u201d asked Basil St. Florian.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy, two of course,\u201d she said. \u201cI should think you\u2019d know by now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ruckus we raised last night was so intense,\u201d he said, \u201cit turned my memories to vapors.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you referring to the first bash or the second?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth were cracking good fun then, were they not?\u201d<\/p>\n

She lay back in the bed and, though by profession an actress and capable of applying any emotionally <\/span>apposite affect to the exquisite symmetries of her face, actually allowed a genuine expression of pleasure to occur, that is, before she remembered that one doesn\u2019t admit to such carnal earnestness easily, and adjusted back to simple, banal cinema beauty.<\/p>\n

Basil dropped the two lumps into the Claridge\u2019s fine cup of Darjeeling\u2014how did they get it, now that the world was seized up in lurid politics and battle?\u2014and brought it to her in bed, where she lay swaddled in sheets, her perfect heart-shaped face aglow with eagerness.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do hope you can stay a bit, darling,\u201d she said. \u201cThe war doesn\u2019t need you desperately today, does it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt hardly ever needs me,\u201d he said, \u201cand never desperately.\u201d<\/p>\n

An hour or so later, he was back in the shower, and then engaged in donning, adjusting, and finally perfecting his uniform: Captain, British Army, of the Horse Guards, a few measly ribbons unimpressive <\/span>in an era when most guardsmen boasted sheets of bright designations of courage on their chests. One would have thought Basil\u2019s war was spent taking dictation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
