\u201cFor my heir, Granddaughter. I intend to name you to that position today.\u201d <\/p>\n

The silence turned to stone as hard as my grandfather\u2019s chair. <\/p>\n

It came to me that some response was expected. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou already have heirs,\u201d I said. <\/p>\n

\u201cNot as diplomatic as she could be,\u201d Viraine said in a dry tone. <\/p>\n

Dekarta ignored this. \u201cIt is true, there are two other candidates,\u201d he said to me. \u201cMy niece and nephew, Scimina and Relad. Your cousins, once removed.\u201d <\/p>\n

I had heard of them, of course; everyone had. Rumor constantly made one or the other heir, though no one knew for certain which. Both<\/i> was something that had not occurred to me. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf I may suggest, Grandfather,\u201d I said carefully, though it was impossible to be careful in this conversation, \u201cI would make two heirs too many.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIndeed,\u201d he said. \u201cBut just enough for an interesting competition, I think.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t understand, Grandfather.\u201d <\/p>\n

He lifted his hand in a gesture that would have been graceful, once. Now his hand shook badly. \u201cIt is very simple. I have named three heirs. One of you will actually manage to succeed me. The other two will doubtless kill each other or be killed by the victor. As for which lives, and which die\u2014\u201d He shrugged. \u201cThat is for you to decide.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
