\u201cWHAT STAR IS THAT, MAMA?\u201d<\/span> Bonnie lifted her hand to point at a brilliant orb in the night sky. \u201cIt\u2019s shining so bright.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not a star, it\u2019s a planet. It\u2019s Venus.\u201d She cuddled her daughter closer on her lap. \u201cI\u2019ve told you about Venus, Bonnie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess I forgot.\u201d She leaned back against Eve\u2019s shoulder in the big rattan chair. \u201cOr maybe it\u2019s because everything seems so\u00a0\u2026 different tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDifferent? We sit out here on the porch almost every night, baby.\u201d It was a precious time for both of them. After supper, they came out on the front porch and looked at the night sky. Eve had even bought a book on astronomy so that she could point out the constellations to Bonnie. \u201cWhat\u2019s different?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d Bonnie\u2019s gaze never left the glittering night sky. \u201cThey just seem\u00a0\u2026 closer. As if I could reach out and touch them. As if they want me to come and touch them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eve chuckled and gave her a hug. \u201cMaybe that\u2019s what you should do when you grow up. Would you like to be an astronaut and go from planet to planet?\u201d<\/p>\n

Bonnie giggled. \u201cThat might be fun. Like Star Trek.<\/span> But I don\u2019t have ears like Mr. Spock.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt could still work.\u201d She smiled as she leaned her head back and gazed up at the sky. \u201cBut those stars are very far away, and you don\u2019t know what you\u2019ll find there. Would you be afraid, baby?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
