Eve Duncan shuddered as she looked down at the pitiful remains of the little girl\u2019s skull that she\u2019d carefully spread on the special tarp on her desk.<\/p>\n

The child\u2019s skull was shattered, and the cheekbones and nasal and orbital bones were only unidentifiable splinters. The Detroit Police Department thought that the child had been beaten to death with a hammer. How the hell was she going to put that little girl\u2019s face together again?<\/p>\n

Eve glanced at Joe Quinn sitting on the couch across the room. \u201cYou\u2019re damn right I am.\u201d She reached out and gently touched one of the little girl\u2019s remaining facial bones still left intact. \u201cWhoever killed this child had to be insane. Who would think it necessary to do this\u2026this monstrosity? She couldn\u2019t have been more than eight years old.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd after hundreds of these reconstructions, it still makes you furious.\u201d His lips tightened. \u201cMe, too. You\u2019d think we\u2019d get used to it. But that never happens, does it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Yes, Joe might be a tough, experienced police detective, but he could be as emotional as Eve when the victims were helpless children. \u201cSometimes I can block it. But this savagery\u2026A hammer, Joe. He used a hammer\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSon of a bitch.\u201d Joe got up and moved across the room to stand behind her. \u201cHave you given her a name yet?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
