She smiled, as usual.<\/p>\n

From her chair she had a fine view of the ocean. This morning it was a wrinkled teal sheet gilded with sunrise. A triangle of pelicans reconnoitered overhead. I doubted she\u2019d notice any of it.<\/p>\n

She moved around a bit, trying to get comfortable.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood morning, Lucy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGood morning, Dr. Delaware.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her purse was at her feet, a huge macram\u00e9 bag with leather straps. She had on a light blue cotton sweater and a pleated pink skirt. Her hair was fawn-colored, sleek, shoulder length with feather bangs. Her slender face was lightly freckled, with great cheekbones and fine features ruled by huge brown eyes. She looked younger than twenty-five.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo,\u201d she said, shrugging and still smiling.<\/p>\n

The smile died. \u201cToday I want to talk about him.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She covered her mouth, then removed her fingers. \u201cThe things he did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t mean what we\u2019ve already been over. I\u2019m talking about things I haven\u2019t told you.\u201d<\/p>\n

She squeezed her lips together. One hand was in her lap, and her fingers began to drum. \u201cYou have no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI read the trial transcript, Lucy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll the crime-scene details. Detective Sturgis\u2019s testimony.\u201d Private testimony, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh .\u00a0.\u00a0. then I guess you do know.\u201d She glanced at the ocean. \u201cI thought I\u2019d dealt with it, but all of a sudden I can\u2019t get it out of my head.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
