\u201cWe can probably learn a great deal simply by asking this Rhodry the right questions. He might be unwilling to answer, but then, we have ways of dealing with the recalcitrant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou certainly do, yes.\u201d Baruma was by now thoroughly frightened, but he knew that he had to speak the truth now rather than let the master find it out on his own later. \u201cBut Rhodry can tell you nothing. The Old One ordered me to crush his mind. I followed my orders, of course. I wish you\u2019d come forward earlier with this proposal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo do I.\u201d The master\u2019s tone was ironic rather than angry, and Baruma could breathe more easily. \u201cI don\u2019t suppose there\u2019s any way to restore his memory?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNone. No matter how long he lives, he\u2019ll never remember so much as his own true name.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a pity, but well, we\u2019ll have to work round it. You know, my friend, you and I might be able to work very well together. What do you think of my bargain?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that it\u2019s a crucial turning of my fate, and that Pd be a fool to refuse it.\u201d Also a dead man if I refuse it, he added to himself. \u201cHow shall we seal it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe way these things are always sealed, my friend: in blood.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
